I'm a graphic designer currently and I'd like to become an art teacher? I have a bachelors degree in Commercial Design. Do I just need a certification now?

  2. It's going to depend what state you're in. In California, I needed to get credentialed plus pass a Subject Examination for Teachers in art, which the state charges you for (and takes three hours.)

Just need? In Arizona, there are Post-Degree Programs- they take from 1.5 to 2 years to complete (going full time). The courses require you to be in the classroom with teachers and students for a certain amount of hours a week. I worked as a sub and used Friday to for classwork and in classroom requirements. Some states let you get an emergency teaching certificate and there are charter schools that it's not required. I am thankful for those teaching classes (I went through the program I mentioned above) and all the time I spent in the classroom before becoming a teacher. I would of never survived without them.

Certification is the key. Look for an "internship", especially if you have current computer expertise- they will use you, except you will have to work and go to school at the same time. Private colleges can sometimes arrange this, but the tuition is steep. You won't know until you start interviewing, again, a good college can send you out and make sure you have your references in order. It is definetly worth the time to become prepared before your teaching experience.
