We have just started a new High School and it is up to me to determine the Grading strands for art. I was wondering if anyone out there would like to share the strands they use when grading.
Thanks

I don't know if this is what you mean by "strands", but I graded art projects with two major criteria:
* Time and effort (evident in class and in the work itself)
* Completing the task as assigned/following directions (no short cuts or otherwise skipping the point of the lesson entirely)Posted 6 months ago # -
Examples of strand sets:
Strand 1: Exploring & Developing ideas
Strand 2: Investigating & Making Art & Design
Strand 3: Evaluating and Developing work
Strand 4: Knowledge and UnderstandingEach of these strands can be taken in consideration for each assignment/project
Another set of strands:
Creativity
Craftmanship (in regards to knowledge of Elements & Principles
EffortI think I will go with the first set of strands.... I found a great resource @ http://www.afour.org.uk/index.php?categoryid=1 Under Resources:Assessment.
Our school will give three grades under each average grade so students and parents can see a broader picture of how grades are determined. A student could be doing A level work in Exploring & Developing Ideas but C level work in actually making art ....

So my official strands are:
* Exploring and Developing Ideas and work
* Execution
* Critical Response
* Essential Understanding
* Work HabitsThese will make up the overall grade in my art class, but each account for certain skill sets that are addressed in my class.
Essentially a student could be very strong in exploring and developing ideas but lacks the skills in the execution aspect. By breaking down the grade in this way, and having each accounted for on report cards parents and students can be more in tune with what their student is acutally learning and being graded on.Posted 6 months ago # -
I've taught on the "S,N, or U' scale and I've taught on the number scale - when I was on the number scale I made and copied super-specifc rubrics that the student and myself could check off.
For example:
One Point Perspective:
5 points - Your initial diagonal lines were rendered neatly with clear use of the straight edge.5 points - You rendered 5 or more buildings of varying sizes with accuracy regarding their direction to your vanishing point.
5 points - Each building has enough detail that it's identity, texture, age, and entrance(s) are understood by the viewer.
5 points - you have obviously made this assignment your own by using details that reflect your lifestyle ad personality.
etc. etc. etc.

Offical descriptions & strands.
Exploring and Developing Ideas
Students are assessed on their development of ideas as artists and as students of art. Students develop their own ideas by doing sketchbook assignments, planning layout and design and making the transition from draft to final stages of work. Students do research on artists and art movements, make connections between art and other disciplines, and meaningfully apply their knowledge to their art.
Execution
This strand determines how each student uses the skills and techniques they have learned during the course of the physical production of art. Students are assessed on the intentionality of their composition, their attention to detail, and the quality of their craftsmanship.Critical Response
This strand determines how the student engages in the critique, self-assessment, and revision processes. Students are assessed on the student’s participation in class critiques, self-reflections and revisions.Essential Understanding
This strand determines if the student has demonstrated knowledge of concept taught in class. Ninth Grade Art focuses on the elements and principles of design and their implementation and meaning within art making.

What do you think about a fellow colleague who passes everybody? do you think this is ok? I feel it puts undue pressure on me as a teacher and reflects poorly on my grade system. There are four other teachers who do not do this.
I am also speaking as a parent who at one time had a high school student who failed English. ( Glad to say, she learned her lesson and is working her ass off in college..)
Is high school just practice for "real life"? Should students just be handed these grades?Posted 2 months ago #
