   hi there. i am looking for a fresh approach to color theory with my high school intro art students. i want to avoid doing the same old color theory project, but it is clear to me that my students need to be refreshed (or learn for the first time- basic color mixing and theory)... any suggestions?

   do you have photoshop access for the kids? i had the kids make a composition based on their own still life contour line drawings (we scanned them in) and then on photoshop they made new compositions, using only complementary colors & the values with in them and then we projected their compositions & are currently making paintings, where they are learning how to make values while painting a real painting rather than some skills block (like intro to painting at unh! lol)

   My students do a self-portrait in Illustrator where they trace the value tones of their image on a second layer, and fill the shapes with appropriate greyscale value tones. After they've created a grayscale protrait, they learn about color schemes and have to choose one to create a sort of expressionistic 2nd version of their portrait. My favorite is the classic analadous in shadow, analagous warm in highlights, but they can choose from any of the described color schemes.. from mono-chromatic to triad, etc.
